Two utterly different men & gaga over gaga...
Two utterly different men in the press today: Hollywood hunk Hugh Grant who you've undoubtedly heard of. And Olaf Schmid - who you may not have heard of. The difference between these two men? One is a spoilt, petulant, overpaid movie star with only one style of acting to his name - stuttering ‘old school’ English chap. The other’s a legendary man who's won the George Cross for his bravery as a bomb disposal expert in Afghanistan.
Which one would you rather have had dinner with? Well, you can’t have dinner with brave staff Sgt Schmid as he died attempting to disable a bomb on his last day of tour in October. But if you had loads of money - and an angle for him - you could probably have dinner with Hugh.
Yet which one has more column inches today? Of course it's Hugh Grant because our society has become so warped that we care more about a celebrity behaving badly (allegedly he had a bit of a brawl with PR Guru Matthew Freud) then about a good man behaving bravely. Again my ‘woman of the year’ vote goes to his widow Christina who’s conducted herself with the utmost dignity and bravery.
TODAY’S THOUGHT: Each one of us needs to strive to get our priorities right in our lives. Because if we each got our priorities right I think we'd be living in a happier country. Not one that's so obsessed with celebrities - but one more concerned about each other's well-being.
Hands up I read the Hugh Grant story - why did I waste my time? The lure of a good headline I suppose. Plus, bizarrely, we've never spoken but he and I have randomly bumped into each other in restaurants, etc., over the years. I can’t explain it further than that and I did waste three minutes of my day and, yes, I love a good gossip - sometimes about celebs. But I was so moved by the Olaf Schmid story and I hope people recognise what such men have done for our country. And in the name of a war that seems endless, pointless and tragic.
Now, I'm not in a morose mood or anything - in fact it's going to be a fantastic day. I'm working hard on some articles for my new book How to Be a Happy Human. Plus I'm seeing one of my oldest girlfriends for a quick lunch at our favourite little cafe that does amazing, tasty and healthy salads.
Love the pop-tastic ‘Telephone ‘ track and video of Lady Gaga and Beyonce - amazing make-up and costumes together with the top Gaga tune. Talk about something that has Madonna styling stamped all over it. Reminded me so much of past Madonna tracks and videos. Hate the product placement in the video though - far too commercial!
Have a lovely day, love, Pam X
