Heartbreak, controversy and cats...
Recently I've been dealing with a lot of people finding it hard to get over breakups. And on my iVillage.co.uk blog that’ll go live sometime today, I tried to point a woman in the right direction: to move on and forget her ex.
Her problem? She talks about how painful things were, but then goes on to say she'll never meet another man like him. What… another one man that'll give her pain? I'm sure there are plenty of those around! But surely she doesn't want another man who causes her pain? Sometimes people are irrational in the grip of heartbreak!
Did you hear about the organisation wanting to sterilise long-term, drug addicted women? I haven't looked at the detail but the concept grabs me as completely sensible. You may think this is astounding but evidently this organisation in America offers chronically drug addicted women a chance to get sterilised.
Sounds unethical and cruel? Well, maybe it is, but until I read the details of this organisation’s programme and see if they have some darker motives or not, I'd like to float the concept at a general level. So let's just think of this concept that women who've been chronic, long-term drug users - over years and years and haven't been able to give up - should be discouraged to bring children into their very dark and miserable world. A good thing I think! Because only some softheaded, numpty that's blinded by political correctness could possibly think that it's these women's rights to bring babies into their lives - lives that are completely unmanageable and nightmarish. I say: what about such children's rights? It's certainly something that should be thought about. Remember this is about very long-term chronically addicted women NOT people who have had "skirmishes" with drugs or overcome their problem with drugs - that's a completely different story and something to be commended wholeheartedly!
Now, uncontroversially, did you see the report yesterday that chimps mourn like humans? A fascinating piece of research showing how much like humans they are, when it comes to grief. And I wasn't surprised by this story about chimps as I had a family of three cats (I'm not talking about the brother and sister cats I now have and have had for the last five years) - but our original cat family: the mother (Fifi), her son (Bopper) and her daughter (Lula) and when they were 13 years old (this would be seven years ago) the daughter, Lula, tragically died and my other two cats went into mourning.
Her brother, Bopper, literally ‘yowled’ for her every night - a heart breaking cry - and her mother, Fifi, was listless. The next year Bopper died from kidney failure and Fifi wasn't herself for a number of months. It was horrible. Eventually Fifi passed away two years later. So one by one we lost our little family of cats.
TODAY’S THOUGHT: I saw a great pal yesterday for a drink at the Century club and both of us had flagged up the fact that we each only had an hour to spare. Now some people might think it's not worth getting together with a pal for an hour - but that's exactly the sort of thing that keeps me sane when some days I work a 10 hour day with barely a break - as many of you do I'm sure.
But the point of this ‘thought’ is that our ‘brief encounter’ gave me a wonderful break where we laughed and relaxed and put all work out of our minds. That's got to be a good thing! So if you have a chance for a snatched hour with someone, then go for it.
Not quite loving them yet but Band of Horses are growing on me!
Enjoy the sunshine, love, Pam X
