Get a real life, life is too short....
In today's Sun newspaper I've commented on some rather shocking survey results about Facebook usage - where the average 22-year-old claims to have 1000 friends.
If you have 500, or 1000, or even more so-called friends- are they really your friends? Does it actually make you feel good having Facebook ‘time’ with them rather than getting together with a real person in the flesh?
Does it make you more ‘popular’ if you have 1050 friends than someone you know who has 1049?
Facebook was a great revolution for people who can keep it in proportion and don't let it dominate their life... as an agony aunt and life coach I hear from many peeps who've over-used it, getting addicted to it, and wasting their time trying to keep up with other people on it...they feel super stressed and anxious the more hours they spend on it - yet they can't stop.
The case studies in the Sun newspaper looked like great peeps - someone else would like them to be their real friend! But they're spending their time on their Facebook friends - when real friends could be theirs.
Rather than feeling better about life many users actually get more isolated - and some end up properly depressed because they've missed out on Facebook time because of work.
TODAY’S THOUGHT: as a behavioural expert my rule is you should never spend more time on Facebook than in actual face-to-face or phone conversations with people.
I'm continually asked why I'm not on Facebook and why I don't twitter - because life is too short and on top of work and seeing friends and family I can just about update my website - and the point of it is free advice for people who enjoy self-help.
I don't want to spend hours on Facebook when I could go meet someone in real life for a real evening out.
Of course if you're isolated because you live in some far flung corner of the country something Facebook will be a godsend - but that's simply not the case for most users.
Over to comedy - Mark Steel was fantastic last night and I'm looking forward to seeing Milton Jones at the Hammersmith Apollo tonight - keep the comedy rolling!
It's the bank holiday - get out and actually live life! Hope you have a lovely weekend, Pamx
