Worried about sex addiction, films and 'reads'...
If you're worried about sex addiction in your life - either your partner's behaviour or your behaviour troubles you - then I'm chatting about this with Tom Dunne on Dublin News talk radio just after 10 AM this morning. You can listen in on the net as we'll be having a wide-ranging chat.
Sticking with sex for a mo' I've just posted a new article on what to do if your partner's no longer interested in sex - on my home page check-a-look at "hot off the press".
Watched 50/50 over the weekend...needed that handy box of tissues! Joseph Gordon-Levitt captured the essence of how it must feel to be struck with life-threatening cancer. Yet despite the enormity of the situation his friendship with Seth Rogen provides some amusing moments that lifts the picture above a straightforward drama.
Also watched A Dangerous Method about Jung and Freud - sadly another plodding film only lifted by Keira Knightley finally breaking free from playing someone over-controlled. If you're a big fan of hers see it - but otherwise miss it.
Back to addiction - the human brain can become addicted to practically anything - anything that leads to changes in the brain's pleasure centres coupled with certain personality traits can end up equalling addictive behaviour.
TODAY’S TIP: the first thing you need to do if you're worried about sex addiction is stop keeping your worries a secret.
I once did a radio prog 15 years ago about how ‘secrets make you sicker’ - and when I used that phrase so many listeners got in touch because they knew the secrets they harboured were making them sicker.
If that phrase makes you feel a bit wary, a bit anxious, a bit nervous and obviously you've been harbouring secret behaviour that isn't going to go away if you allow it to stay secret.
If you don't feel ready yet to confide in a friend or family member then definitely get in touch with one of the 12 step programmes [e.g., like alcoholics anonymous] where you can anonymously discuss your situation.
Don't keep it a secret - its power grows the more secretive you are.
On to lighter topics - I'm a massive Robert Harris fan - love his books set in ancient Italy like Pompeii, Imperium and Lustrum as well as his other books like The Ghost, Enigma, Fatherland, etc. - but I'm not so sure about The Fear Index. Read it on the beach in Cape Verde between snorkel trips. After a promising start to be a taut thriller the plot gets as lost as the central character loses the plot. If that makes any sense!
But if you're a fan you're probably going to read it - so enjoy it and don't trouble yourself the way I did about some of the more ridiculous twists and turns.
Happy reading, Pam x
