Reality check...
Cheryl Cole is beautiful - and she can put on a good pop performance (though not a patch on pop stars like Gaga or Beyonce)- but she shouldn't use a big family entertainment show to play out her little quarrel with Wagner… there's a time and place for everything.
The X Factor has become more about the judges squabbles - those are more interesting than the last two weeks' songs. Let's face it the judges are always banging on about "being relevant" - how relevant are the Beatles and Elton John? Yup, of course brilliant songs have come from both but they're not 'relevant'!
When the judges are more interesting than the acts (bar Matt) it's time for a reality check.
Sorry to see Paije leave last night - had hoped Louis would bring it to deadlock - was curious who the public liked more - Cher or him. I think Cher should’ve been told to come back in a year or two when she was emotionally stronger. She still looks worryingly thin.
The campaign to keep Wagner in is staggering - of course the quirky acts are going to have a following - like Jedward last year - but he's beyond quirky, he's a joke. This campaign appeals to my subversive side. And any of the good acts that go, because of him staying, will get a record deal if the industry thinks they deserve it.
Needed a box of tissues when watching the film about our war heroes before the X Factor finalists sang their charity single (you can’t beat Bowie’s voice on the track Heroes). Seeing the faces of soldiers in their teens, barely out of their teens and beyond, facing what they do, fills me with sorrow - that we send young lives off to these awful wars. There must be a solution and I can’t wait till the rest of our soldiers are home.
TODAY’S THOUGHT: you may not like this version of Heroes but please do get it for all the money’s going to this amazing cause.
We do far too little for soldiers injured at war. How would you feel if people turned their back on you after you lost a limb - or worse.
On the lighter side - had a lovely long Sunday lunch with friends yesterday - tried to cook herb-crusted lamb. My herb crust was stodgy - if you've got a good recipe or tips for herb crust please e-mail to "your e-mail of the week" on my homepage - Cheers! Thankfully people know I'm not a good cook...so what did they expect??
One of my favourite books - Any Human Heart by William Boyd - has been dramatised on Channel 4. Watched the first instalment last night and I haven't been grabbed by it yet but am willing myself to be.
I hear Nigel Haver's has walked from the jungle - he obviously had no idea what he was getting himself into.
Too bad that Felicity Kendal get booted off Strictly - haven't had time to watch but the little I've seen she was impressively elegant… something lacking from a couple of the others.
Argh...so many more vastly important things going on in the world then reality shows - but I guess we all need some light relief.
Must run to work, happy Monday, Pam X
